Main chapel paintings

Still in the main chapel, on the Gospel side, we can see two paintings on boards, dating from the 16th or 17th century. The one closest to the main altar represents “Appearance of the Resurrected Christ to the Apostles”.

The painting furthest from the main altar depicts the image of Saint Peter, from the Tarouca convent, sitting in an armchair, in an attitude of blessing.

On the upper level of the main altar on the Gospel side, we can see a painting representing Vitória de Jesus painted by the painter David Bastos, while on the Epistle side, we find a painting on canvas, which probably dates from the 18th or 19th century, with the name “Jesus in the Garden of Olives”.

Still on the main altar, and next to the Epistle, there is an elegant candle, made of gilded wood and polychrome escutcheon, from the 19th century, with a cut-out triangular base, decorated with geometric and vegetal motifs. At the top, it has a circular wax shaving and candle holder decorated with a set of foliage. The base is based on three legs that end in scrolls and its height is 193 centimeters.

Neo-Rococo carved motifs were placed on the crossing arch, which frame a heart within an eye-catching radiance.
