The torchbearer angels of the main altar

Flanking the last step, we find two torch-bearing angels, made of polychrome wood, dating from the 18th century. Both figures are of medium size, appearing on two overlapping round bases: the first of which is more recent and the second in the shape of a cloud.

The torchbearer angel on the Gospel side (visitor's left side) is dressed in military clothing, with a golden breastplate decorated with a narrow thread frieze, also in gold, and brownish mid-calf boots. He also wears a belted tunic, with sleeves, in salmon, gold and white tones, which are embellished with phytomorphic motifs and a cloak that falls to the right side and is fastened by a buckle to the chest. The cloak and tunic have a flowing air. In his right hand he holds a spiral-shaped torch holder, which ends at the top with a circular candle holder. His left hand is folded and resting on his chest. Slightly inclined face, with a serene, calm, bright appearance and a head with plenty of curly, blonde hair. The wings are removable, notched and cut out.

In turn, the torchbearer angel on the Epistle side (visitor's right side) is very similar to the previous one. He is presented in military clothing, with a golden breastplate decorated with a narrow thread frieze, also in gold, and brownish mid-calf boots. He also wears a belted tunic, with sleeves, in salmon, gold and white tones, which are embellished with phytomorphic motifs and a cloak that falls to the right side and is fastened by a buckle to the chest. In his left hand he holds a cornucopia-shaped torch holder, which ends at the top with a circular candle holder. His right hand is folded and resting on his chest. Slightly inclined face, with a serene, calm, bright appearance and a head with plenty of curly, blonde hair. The wings are removable, notched and cut out.

The dressing room, angels and choir can still be seen. Sometimes, they are covered by a painting representing the Child God, by António Alves from Braga, dated 1931, and placed there during the period when the Casa do Menino Deus was entrusted to the Franciscan Missionaries of Mary. The two angels at the foot of the monstrance, referred to in the contract, no longer appear on this altar.
